Denver council members want to use $3 million in city funds to pay off $300 million in medical debt. Denver is now among more than two dozen cities, states or counties that are actively abolishing their resident's medical debt by working with RIP Medical Debt. It works directly with hospitals and debt collectors to purchase debt at a discount. The debt must be selected as part of a campaign, such as the one proposed in Denver. The idea to erase medical debt comes as the issue is increasingly urgent for United States policymakers. Around 100 million Americans have medical debt.*
